Seed Savers Exchange $40,000 in support of efforts to preserve a large heritage seed collection and make heirloom and organic varieties of fruits and vegetables available to the farming community and the public. Sierra Club Foundation $50,000 for the Responsible Trade Program’s efforts to educate the public and policy makers about the environmental effects of trade agreements. Union of Concerned Scientists $40,000 for their Food and Environment Program, which educates policy makers and the public about the dangers of genetically engineering food crops to produce pharmaceuticals and industrial chemicals. Union of Organizations of the Sierra Juarez, Oaxaca $19,750 for indigenous people and small-scale farmers in Mexico to develop defense strategies for protecting their maize against contamination by transgenic corn, and for work to revive traditional farming and soil restoration techniques. Wild Farm Alliance $12,500 for their Native Pollinators as Ambassadors of the Wild project, which assists farmers and certification agencies in making biodiversity a cornerstone of organic agriculture.
