Application Procedures, Proposal Deadlines, and Contact Information

We suggest that all applicants read this material carefully before applying. It may save you time and resources, should your program not match our funding priorities. Requests for support should be made by letter of inquiry. Hard copy is preferred over fax or e-mail transmission. There are no deadlines for letters of inquiry — they are accepted throughout the year. Letters will be acknowledged as soon as possible. If your project falls within the foundations' priority interest areas, a full proposal will be invited. The foundations provide general support as well as project-specific grants. The foundations make funding decisions twice a year, usually in April/May and November/December. If a full proposal is requested, it must be received by the second Monday in January for consideration in the spring, or the second Monday in August for consideration in the fall.  There will be a one-time only change for this deadline in 2008 to the last Monday in July. Applicant organizations must be classified as a 501(c)(3) by the US Internal Revenue Service. Foreign applicants should note that the foundations make a very limited number of grants abroad. Kindly refrain from sending a full proposal unless invited to do so. Please do not include news clippings, reports, brochures, cassettes, videos or other materials with letters of inquiry. Plastic folders, binders and other presentation materials are not necessary. Letters of inquiry should be no more than three pages in length and contain the following: Basic information about your organization, including a brief mission statement and an overview of current activities. A contact person's name, title, mailing address, telephone, fax, and e-mail and web address if available. A description of the organization’s approach to the problem being addressed and your planned activities. A line item budget --- projected expenses for the whole organization and for a specific project, if applicable.
