MISSION INVESTING

CS Fund is dedicated to aligning our investments with our values, and to using all of our resources to advance our mission.

History

1980s

In the 1980s, CS Fund was an early adopter of negative screens against alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and gambling.

1990s

In the 1990s, we added screens against nuclear power and defense contractors, as well as a no-buy list of companies that worked against our mission and grantmaking, such as Monsanto.

At that time we also made a $1 million investment in seven SRI funds, and made two PRIs to our longtime grantees, Government Accountability Project and Native Seed SEARCH.

2018

CS Fund started a new process to:

  • Adopt negative screens against dirty energy, mining, and chemicals and divest holdings in those industries

  • Invest in new ESG funds across asset classes

  • Have ongoing conversations with our fund managers about racial and gender equity

  • Sign onto investor letters to encourage stronger ESG practices.

2021

2023

In fall 2021, we began a year-long journey of learning, policy development, and implementation to more closely align our investments with our mission and values in partnership with Integrated Capital Investing and 45 North Partners.

In fall 2023, the Board of Directors adopted a new Investment Policy Statement reflecting a 100% mission-aligned portfolio with a carve-out for impact investing for sustainable systems, which will be launched in 2024.
